Closing Rank

If you work for Duke, you gotta toe the company line.
James Coleman said Monday that statements by defense lawyers have caused him to
question the impartiality of District Attorney Mike Nifong.

Really, he listened to the defense lawyers and came to this conclusion. That is some fancy lawyering you are doing. I mean, the defense lawyers are just interested in the truth coming out. They have no dog in the fight at all.

I don't know if anyone was raped at that party, but I know this much, no one is getting convicted. That has nothing to do with the facts of the case, however.

I was thinking more about why I am blogging so much about the Duke case. This case is really about the beast. 6-6-6, Ronald Wilson Reagan. (Colbert did a great bit on the connection) Opportunity is one of the great things about America -- or at least the concept of America. Opportunity makes freedom real. Without opportunity, people are just under the tyranny of poverty. Freedom and Opportunity make America America.

That is what makes the beast so grotesque. The embrace of the beast by the American people is a repudiation of the very values we proclaim. Reagan told the country that poor people were the enemy. Any compassion or even caring about those less fortunate was trampled under Reagan era greed. The beast’s objective was to dismantle the New Deal – fuck Horatio Alger, I got mine. The embrace of this philosophy by the nation is the great shame of the last 25 years.

So what does that have to do with Duke? In post beast America, when wealthy white children are accused of raping a poor black woman, we all know who the villain will be. Wilt Chamberlain said “No one roots for Goliath.” Not in America today.

I dunno. I mean, of course, yes, you are absolutely correct and you grasp it perfectly re: Reagan's legacy. Sometimes I get too caught up in trying to be careful and only say provable things (because if I say them on the politics board at I am beseiged with demands for proof). But you are of course right.

When it comes to the Duke case, I believe that athletes at a place like Duke (especially in the lacrosse, soccer, rugby type sports) are going to exude that clique-y privilege party-throwing cool kid with dark amoral shit just below the surface aura. I believe these are swampy, festering social frameworks and that a lot of bad shit will happen. It is absolutely believable that a lacrosse player would write an email talking about skinning black women alive, as happened here.

But I don't know about this specific case. It is entirely possible this chick is gaming the system. Which will only lead to hug white male backlash BS, wherein it will be used for the next twenty years as Exhibit A "proof" that black people are parasite victims looking to ruin white men's lives.

I personally believe that the most heinous shit goes unreported, and the squeaky wheels are often the manipulators. So it's that whole "How to Tell a True War Story" thing from The Things They Carried. The story iself feels true, because we know this shit goes down. Whether this specific version is true is not necessarily the point from a systemic vantage, though it would be bitter and brutal to be falsely accused of anything like this. If you forced me to guess, I'd guess these guys acted like total assholes, something happened, and she wanted to get them for the dehumanized way they surely treated her. But she may have also come in there having made some dumb decisions, like going to a strip job wasted.

Whatever happens, you can be sure that every voice in the whole Duke affair, on every front and every angle, will be self-serving. That's why I can only take it i very small doses.

The lack of DNA evidence does make me suspicious. I don't know if this woman was raped. What could have happened is that she showed up there (possibly wasted) and some really nasty things were done and probably threatened. Now she is getting some revenge. That is possible. It is also possible that these fucks raped her. Thing is, if you work for Duke, it could only be one of those things.
